Some of us may consider scarves as women’s fashion accessories. Is it true? Let’s trace the origins of the scarf. Who and where was it first made?

Scarves have a long history, at least we can trace them back to Ancient Roman times. At that time its main function was as a sweat wiping cloth. Known as consciousium (Latin term for sweat cloth).

The Ancient Romans developed the scarf into a fashion accessory for men. How to wear it is usually wrapped around the neck or tied to a belt.

According to historical records, scarves were first made from badaktoto ordinary cloth, not wool. Served as a military rank insignia for the Chinese Emperor Cheng (Shih Huang Ti). The use of scarves on a wide scale occurred around the 17th century by Croatian mercenaries. Even at that time, scarf materials were not yet wool, they were still ordinary cloth made from cotton or silk.

In France, scarves are very popular for men to wear. The color of the scarf is a sign of the political sect of the person wearing it. They call a scarf a cravat, from the Croatian word kravata. From the cravat it developed into the wooley scarf (scarf made of wool) with various colors and designs as we know it today. Since then scarves are not only for men. Women, children, rich and poor alike wore them.

Now, as we can see in many fashion and lifestyle media, the use of scarves is showing a revival. Patrick Smith, a fashion observer, calls it a “must-have” fashion item in every corner of the world.

From a clothing perspective, scarves have an advantage, because of their flexibility. Everyone has the freedom to be creative and wear a scarf whether it is around the neck, waist, tied around the wrist and thigh, wrapped around a bag, or simply tucked into the back pocket of trousers.

According to several fashion observers, from a business perspective, the future of scarves looks bright. In the current climate of high creativity, we have the opportunity to create scarves in attractive and varied designs and colors. With tailored materials, rainy season, summer or uncertain seasons like now, we can wear a scarf at any time.
